Running Black Patrick Todoroff 9780578070711 Books

Format: Paperback
Do you want a extremely good cyberpunk tale, with likable characters that act like real people?

All this in a not so distant future, where Mankind still struggles with its nature and where people still turn to God, searching for what means to be Human.

And what about some corporate espionage and intense action?

some points are not fantastic, especially regarding religion but basically the book is really good

If you want to read all of this in one place, look no further than this book!

He writes like a professional, juggling several viewpoints and plot-lines without a glitch.

for sure i want more Eshu International novels and more information about the future that the author has painstakingly created.

some points in the book are not enough developed especially regarding the past, i feel that there will have to be more explanations in the next books

I hope that the next book - Shift Tense -(but i am not able to find it and by now it would have been printed...) will reveal more about this not so-bright future created by Patrick

Running Black Patrick Todoroff 9780578070711 Books Reviews

As with many books of this type, there's a core team of get `r' done types called ESHU International that Todoroff is franchising into a series. Running Black is the seemingly straightforward story of what happens when ESHU Intl is sent to steal a revolutionary piece of nanotechnology and things go either very wrong or very right, depending on your point of view.

I knew I was in for an atypical Christian fiction read when the protagonist and first person narrator Jace says, three paragaphs into his part of the story "Christ, I needed some sleep." Most people in Christian fiction don't talk like that. BUT gun-toting mercs on a dangerous mission? Yeah, I'm sure some of them do. And that right there was how I knew that Todoroff was not writing the story for a presumed audience or to curry favour with a publisher. He was writing a story that he thought would be fun to tell. And those are the stories that are the most fun to read.

I did have fun reading it, very much fun. All in all I'd say I'm giving the book four out of five stars. I'm taking one star off because I still had a few issues with some of the characters. Because the book IS a Christian book that means there were religious Christian characters who were ex-members of ESHU international. I know why Todoroff wanted them in the story because they have a key part to play in the narrative. But they seemed to be the most stilted of his characters and the ones he had the hardest time trying to make believable. Understandably so. Another reviewer here says they seemed hypocritical, but to me that was VERY believable...how many Christians have you met who aren't struggling with reconciling their old ways to their new ones? Still, their dialog felt stilted to me, and some of the things they were able to procure seemed just too convenient.

I also had the story spoiled for me by one of the author's own blog posts (shame on you!) and that made it pretty hard to read in spots, knowing as I did what was coming. I think that may also have affected my rating, so I'm wavering between 4 and 4.5 stars.
Sometimes a book grabs you. Sometimes it exceeds your expectations. Sometimes it changes the way you think. But very rarely does a book succeed in doing all three.

I will preface this review by confessing I too am an author. Why does this matter? Because it is extremely difficult for an author to write a fair review. Oftentimes he will read competitively, judging the material not as a stand-alone story, but as a contrast to "what he would have done." Other times, he hammers out a glowing 5-star review in the name of mutual respect and courtesy. This is admirable, but not always the best means for browsing customers to get fair impressions of the books in question. So with all of this in mind and out in the open, I offer my review, summarized in two simple sentences

This is a 5-star review. Yes, it's really that good.

I don't want to focus on the story or specific characters in this review - that's what product descriptions are for. Instead, I want to focus on what this book does well and why you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy.

Characters are the most important aspect of any story. Too many writers get lost in a premise and never take the time to flesh out the vessels who are going to be presenting it. In "Running Black," the setting never (not once) takes precedence over the characters who drive it forward. Every single character is memorable. Every single one has a purpose - an essential role that enhances the story. There are enough of them present for each reader to have their favorites, but not so many of them that it becomes overwhelming. That's a fine line, and Todoroff walks as well as any writer could hope to.

Things happen naturally. I won't elaborate too much on this, as I don't want to spoil anything, but I'll say that nothing is ever forced for the sake of drama. Things happen the way you'd imagine them to happen. Sometimes that's dramatic, and sometimes it isn't. But that's life. That's unpredictability. And in a storyline, that's exactly what you want.

It's smart. It's not a "technical" book, but it doesn't shy away from technical things, and when they're presented, they're done so in a very engaging, yet informative way. Science fiction books generally fall into one of two categories hard or soft. The former focuses more on the science, the latter the fiction. "Running Black" is somewhere in the middle, which is a pleasing mix (this coming from an author who falls on the softer side of the spectrum). Hard science fiction bores me. This did not, by any stretch. If you're scared around science fiction, don't be around this book. Anyone could enjoy this.

And lastly...people, the book is just fun. That's really what every review boils down to. "Am I going to enjoy this?" Yes, you will. I would almost guarantee it.

No book is perfect. "Running Black" has its flaws, my books have their flaws, every book has their flaws. There's no exception to that rule. But some books' flaws are so minuscule, they essentially don't matter. This is one of them. This is a fantastic read, from start to finish. This is a book that would be hard not to love. That's the bottom line.

Five stars, and worth every one of them.
